Established in 2002, Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr opened the Xavier Institute of Higher Learning. This was a boarding school for mutants. Free to learn to control their powers, Charles and Erik also established a Black Ops team to deal with Mutant affairs when issues would strike up. With the five original students as part of the team, they dubbed the group as the X-Men.
They operated well together for a full year, but in 2003, differences of opinions on how to treat humanity led to a split between Erik and Charles. Erik ended up leaving the X-Men and creating his own group, the Brotherhood of Mutants, dropping his name and taking on the title of Magneto.
The X-Men were the first group of superhumans, followed by the Avengers ten years later. To this day, the X-Men still operate in secret, the group having changed in incarnations several times.
