"Here I go. Alone. Armed. Facing impossible odds. Crawling through a ventilation duct. As Jubilee would no doubt say: '... eat your heart out, Bruce Willis!'" ~Uncanny X-Men (Vol 1) #272
PSYLOCKE
Name: Elisabeth Glorianna Braddock
Alias(es): Bee, Betsy, Lis (pronounced "Liz")
REGULAR
Age: ~29
Height: 5β 8β
Physical Description: Her eyes were once an intense icy blue, but she now has a new pair of cybernetic eyes that have exotic purple irises, instead. Bee's natural hair color is blonde, but she would never admit to being so ordinary, and so she dyes her hair a deep purple hue (it usually matches her eyes). Betsy is of average height, standing at 5'8", and she has the musculature of an average woman her age who eats healthily and works out regularly.
Face Claim: Eva Green
Personality: Betsy is independent and a bit of a "free spirit"... a nonconformist... And, she has always been a bit spoiled. The Braddock family is incredibly wealthy, and Bee has become accustomed to enjoying the finer things in life - nothing but the best! Although she is a bit spoiled, Bee is not a brat. Rather, she is a charismatic, caring and warm individual. Bee is usually quite tactful and knows just the right thing to say for any given situation (which is likely due to her Telepathic gifts, specifically the gift of Empathy); although, she is also well versed at being witty and sarcastic.
Bee has, perhaps, a somewhat over-developed sense of adventure, brought on at a young age, thanks largely in part to her older brother Jamie, who is quite the wild child (and perhaps not the best role model). She enjoys doing things from driving fast cars and skydiving, to partying it up - anything that gets her adrenaline pumping or creates excitement. Betsy is not usually one to turn down a chance at having a new experience.
Also, growing up in Braddock Manor with a full house-staff, including a maid, butler and cook, Betsy has never been taught to take care of such mundane things as housework, cooking, cleaning and the like - nor does she care to learn.
Affiliation: SHIELD
Identity: SECRET
Powers or Special Abilities:
TELEPATHY β Betsy can communicate on a direct mind-to-mind basis with other intelligent beings. Her telepathy is automatic with willing minds or those with a willpower less then her own. Her telepathic abilities allow her to sense, broadcast and detect thought patterns, and share memories or dreams with others. She has command over the following specialized telepathic abilities:
- Psychic Scanning: She is able to psychically scan vast distances to learn the status, condition or intentions of others.
- Psi-Bolts: She can shoot bolts of psychic energy that can stun, injure or kill.
- Psycho-Blast: a unique ability all her own, Psylocke can shoot a focused beam of telepathic energy at an opponent, knocking them physically while attacking them mentally. This blast was powerful enough to pierce the psi-proof helmet of the Juggernaut, a feat Professor X couldn't accomplish upon his first encounter.
- Precognitive Powers: She can randomly and infrequently perceive visions of future events in her dreams. [OOC: This power will only be used as-needed and with Staff approval]
- Psionic Butterfly: When using her powers, a magenta butterfly shaped aura often appears around her face. When in her astral form, she often takes the form of her butterfly aura sometimes depicted with eyes within its wings.
- Psi-Blade: This can affect a victim's mind so as to cause the victim pain or unconsciousness. She often uses this power to focus her psi-energy into creating Psionic Blades (or Psi-Blades, for short) that emanate from her hands and give off a translucent magenta glow. Her favorite way to manifest this energy is as a single sword that has been likened to the fabled Excalibur blade of British lore.
- Mind Link: Ability to develop and maintain a mental link with others.
- Astral Projection: She can project her astral form from her body onto astral plane. In the physical plane she can travel in astral form over vast distances, though her body is left behind and vulnerable. In the astral plane, she can mentally create psionic objects and manipulate the aspects of her environment. She can communicate with others astrally through her own will, or through contact with the thoughts and memories of others. When Psylocke enters the Astral Plane she can take on any appearance she wants.
- Hallucinations: Betsy can create illusions directly within a target's mind. However, she can only use this power on someone within her line of vision, and she can only effect one mind at a time. These hallucinations/illusions only appear in the mind of her target, but to the target the illusion seems real. If the target "dies" in the hallucination, they lapse into a coma in reality. Creating a believable illusion often takes the majority of Bee's focus, which can leave her vulnerable to an attack.
EMPATHY: Betsy can detect the surface emotions of others; however, she cannot alter them. She can detect emotional states and further refine that knowledge to discover physical states, surroundings, and location, insofar as these have an influence on emotions. This ability can expand to specific locations, especially if they have recently been witness to a surge of powerful emotion. As a side effect of her powers, strong emotions can influence Bee as if she were feeling them herself, sometimes altering her own emotional state.
Skills:
ASSESSMENT - Psylocke can tell the difficulty of many tasks and judge the abilities of others. She has the potential to learn the difficulty of a task or one ability or intensity score about an individual, thanks to her Telepathy.
OBSERVATION - The general ability to tell when something is interesting or out of place. Bee is quite aware of what is going on around her, thanks in part to her telepathy.
TELEPATHIC COMBATANT - As a telepath, Psylocke takes advantage of her powers in a fight by reading her opponents' movements seconds before they make them, giving her the opportunity to counter-attack faster, and she can also use her telepathy to mask her presence from other people, humans and super-humans alike. She is also skilled with Astral Combat.
BRITISH LORE - Being a a Brit, she's well steeped in the lore, history and mythology of her people. Betsy greatly admires the King Arthur legends, and she "gets" British humor (and actually enjoys Monty Python, to her parents' embarrassment).
WEAPON STYLE (Sword // Blades) - Psylocke is skilled in utilizing anything from a sword to the sharp edge of a playing card, if necessary, assuming she can lift it. Betsy has had several years' training in fencing (and other combat training) with a private instructor at her parents' estate. She is skilled in swordplay, but she prefers her own Psychic Blade.
Advantages:
30ΒΊ PERCEPTION - This gift allows Betsy to "see with the heart", allowing her to avoid over-reliance on her eyes for seeing her environment. Her Telepathy senses people in the area, and she can also then see through their eyes.
CHARISMATIC - Betsy just seems to have that special magnetic charm or appeal about her. There is something about Bee that people just can't seem to resist. She seems to have a personal attractiveness or interestingness that enables her to influence others in a positive manner. Betsy also has a habit of turning heads where ever she goes. She's just damn attractive, and her exotic hair and eye color also help her to turn heads.
CON-GOER - Betsy is completely jazzed about her mutant abilities and what they can possibly amount to. Bee can push herself to her limits as she tries to reach new heights, or sustain using it for prolonged periods of time. She also learns quite quickly - so long as the subject is something she is interested in.
EIDETIC MEMORY - Betsy possesses the uncanny ability to recall images, sounds, or objects in memory with great accuracy and in seemingly abundant volume. One of the most useful advantages of this ability is sometimes she is able to remember her dreams with exact detail.
INSIGHT - Betsy's powers give her unique insight into those around her, revealing emotional states and motivations without any actual thinking on her part.
Disadvantages:
MIGRAINE - Psylocke is migraine-prone, especially when she over-uses her powers. She will become super-sensitive to light and sound, and her equilibrium and/or depth perception may be off. It is nearly impossible for Bee to concentrate on anything when she is suffering from a migraine; however, it's nothing a dark, quiet room, a cup of strong tea and some pills won't cure - along with the passage of time.
MORTAL - Psylocke is just human - Regardless of any armor she might wear, Betsy is only human and is susceptible to pain, injury and disease.
Occupation: Hero // Adventurer
Citizenship: UK
Place of Birth: Braddock Manor, Maldon, Essex, England
Relatives:
- Sir James Braddock Sr. (father; deceased)
- Elizabeth Braddock (mother; deceased)
- Brian Braddock (twin brother)
- James "Jamie" Braddock Jr. (older brother)
History:
James Braddock Sr. was a denizen of Otherworld, an other-dimensional realm. Merlyn sent James to Earth to father the champion who would be known as Captain Britain. Arriving in England, Dr. Braddock became one of the United Kingdom's leading research scientists. James soon married and set up home in Braddock Manor. There, Brian created a highly advanced, supercomputer he named Mastermind. Dr. and Mrs. Braddock had three children, Jamie (the eldest), and twins, Brian and Elizabeth. When Betsy and Brian were in their early twenties, their parents were killed in an explosion in Dr. Braddock's laboratory caused by the malfunctioning computer Mastermind.
Brian Braddock pursued post-graduate studies in Physics at Thames University, while Betsy worked as a charter pilot. Soon after Brian became the hero Captain Britain, Betsy alerted him that their brother Jamie had been injured while testing his racing car in the grounds of Braddock Manor, apparently an attack rather than an accident. Betsy flew Brian back to the Manor, but their plane was downed as they neared the crash by the psychic powers of Dr. Synne; luckily both inside survived the crash. Dr. Synne subsequently mind controlled Betsy into seeing her brothers as hideous monsters, causing her to attack them, but they managed to overpower her. Betsy was taken to the nearby Morder Research Center for treatment, unwittingly delivering her into the hands of one of Synne's agents, Dr. Ramsey. When Brian managed to defeat Synne, things only worsened. Freed of Synne's mind control, Ramsey reverted to his true allegiances as an agent of the Red Skull, taking both Betsy and Jamie as hostages. Both were subsequently freed by Captain Britain and his new ally, Captain America. It was after this that Betsy experienced her first reported psychic incident (there may have been earlier, unreported ones, but Synne's mind control appears to have unlocked her psychic potential, allowing it to start to deepen and grow); later, Betsy had a precognitive dream warning her of Brian's peril fighting the mad Lord Hawke.
Betsy quit the charter business and took up modeling, instead. Some time later, with her psychic powers growing and after Brian had departed overseas to continue his studies (where he met and befriended Spider-Man), Betsy made mental contact with a STRIKE Psi agent (STRIKE stands for Special Tactical Response for International Key Emergencies, the U.K.'s equivalent of SHIELD), and was soon recruited by Agent Matthew (later renamed Gabriel), with whom she pursued a brief romance. While with STRIKE, Betsy became the lover of fellow psi, Tom Lennox. Maintaining her modeling career as a cover, at one point, Betsy attempted to infiltrate the Hellfire Club for STRIKE, where her father had been a member of the London Branch's Inner Circle, where he held the position of Black Bishop, but she was warned off by Lady Tessa (Sage).
Betsy had lost track of her brother for a while, while he was adventuring in other dimensions, but he returned in time to save her life when she and her fellow STRIKE Psi's were targeted for assassination by Slaymaster, who had been hired by the crimelord, Vixen, to cover her takeover of the agency. Betsy, Tom, and the sole other survivor of the Psi Division, Alison Double, sought refuge with Brian in Braddock Manor, but they had to flee there after a battle between Brian, his allies (the Special Executive), and the hero killing, extra-dimensional cybiote, the Fury. With the insane mutant reality-warper Mad Jim Jaspers taking over the country, the group sought to hide out in London, but Tom was killed, and Betsy and Alison were captured by government forces. The two women ended up in a concentration camp until Jaspers' reign was brought to an end, partially through the efforts of her brother. Betsy, who had been in mental contact with Tom when he died, met and convalesced under the care of Victoria Bentley, an old friend of Dr. Strange and the Black Knight, at the camp. Victoria not only helped her heal, but also taught her how to harness the trauma she had felt, using it to develop and strengthen her psi powers.
Betsy eventually returned home to Braddock Manor. Soon after, her brother fought a counterpart of his from another reality, the villainous Kaptain Briton. Briton won the encounter and briefly took Brian's place while extradimensional mercenaries, the Technet, took the wrong man back to Briton's fascist reality. Briton tried to rape Betsy, but she fried his mind with her psi powers, killing him.
Subsequently, RCX, the agency which had replaced STRIKE, came to Braddock Manor seeking Captain Britain's aid. When Brian refused to work with them, they tricked him into leaving the country, and they were then able to persuade Betsy to become the new Captain Britain. While wearing Kaptain Briton's costume, Betsy magnified her strength to superhuman levels when she wore it, and she could fly. The hero, Captain UK, trained Betsy in crime fighting skills and they were partners for several months. Soon after, opting to go solo as the new Captain, Brian's enemy the Vixen lured Betsy into an ambush, where Slaymaster brutally beat Betsy and blinded her. Brian came to Betsy's rescue and once again took up the Captain Britain mantle.
Now blind, Betsy developed a sort of psionic sight. She could use her psionic powers instead of her eyes to 'see', although she could not perceive colors; however, she could distinguish people from the their characteristic psionic signatures. Most non-organic objects, including doors and walls, appeared translucent to Betsy, allowing her to 'see' through them.
Betsy was offered new cybernetic eyes by the RCX, though she did feel a bit torn about it. On one hand, she had grown accustomed to her psionic sight. On the other, it would feel awfully nice to have the luxury of 'normalcy' by having eyes again. In the end, Betsy agreed to the cybernetic eyes; however, she insisted that the eyes have purple irises, likely to compliment her lavender hair (which she dyes, but don't you dare let her know that you know this!). These eyes have the capability of recording, much like a video camera; however, they are not currently employed in this fashion.
Betsy was recently offered a transfer to SHIELD - at the request of Fury, actually, which she accepted with gusto, and she has taken on the codename: Psylocke.
