For them at the time, it looked like nothing more than new coolant packs for the the Thermonuclear generators. In reality? It was energy-dispersed genetic modifiers, specifically created to forcefully-- and instantly-- evolve all humans to equal the playing field between human and the super humans-- the evolved. If they could not stop the evolved, then they would join them.

But It backfired.

Half of the entire human population was killed in the instant of disbursement. A fourth became little more than super powered monsters of myth. Only a one forth of the human population had the desired results. The Evolved were left genetically unaffected. The populations of the world suddenly and violently revolted in ways that had previous never been seen. By the year 2025, war had ravaged the entire world, as had the thermonuclear generators. The oceans receded, the climates shifted, and cities that had once been prosperous fell into nothing more than dust. Only one city remained-- the city that had been protected by the now mysterious Toltec.

Our world is this world. The year is 2100 and nothing is the same. The Gifted rule Rio De Janeiro with an unyielding rule, forcing human children to take the gift in order to receive their place in society. The evolved are reduced to criminals and to ruin-- or are utilized by the city in tasks suiting to their power sets. The Gifted are controlled through water supplies and distributed suppressants-- all against their knowledge.

Outside the city Rebellion grows. The cursed-- those who were mutated beyond humanity by the gift-- live below ground in the remains of the metro rail system, clinging onto life and control in the only ways they can.
