“No smashing. Deal?”
Name: Jane Foster
Alias(es): None.
REGULAR , NPC, or TEMP: Regular.
Age: 28
Height: 5’ 3”
Physical Description: I’ve always been on the petite side. In junior high I attempted to make the basketball team, and they placed me on the rec league, assuming I’d grow. …I didn’t. Luckily I didn’t become a basketball player, so it hardly matters. My appearance is pretty low-maintenance – I don’t colour my hair or paint my nails, but I’m fortunate that comfy-chic is kind of in right now. (It IS kind of in right now… right? I mean, not that I really care, it’s just that Darcy said…)
Face Claim: Natalie Portman
Personality: My mind is a perpetual motion machine. Really, that’s the best way to describe it. It wants to know why and when and if, even when I haven’t quite sussed out the how of something. I’ve been called a geek before, but I think that’s just because I get excited about my work. And if that’s what it means, I’m definitely a geek; a well-designed experiment or data set is better than a night in front of the television or at a football game any day.
However, that’s not to say I don’t get excited about other things; I’m not one of those scientists who were born without social cues. I just… tend toward intellectual pursuits.
Wait. That does sound geeky.
…Damn.
Affiliation: None.
Identity: Public.
Powers or Special Abilities: None.
Skills: I’m a scientist. I wouldn’t call it a skill, per se, but I can map a star chart or collate light transmission data with one arm held behind my back. So while my skill set doesn’t include a cape and hammer, I like to think I have my strengths.
Advantages: Brains. Luckily it’s a lot of them – this isn’t a time for modesty, I assume? – because physically I’ve got next to nothing, advantagewise. I suppose in the right field my equipment could be called an advantage, too – 70% of it doesn’t exist anywhere else on earth.
Disadvantages: Again, no cape. Not that I really think it’s my style, but it obviously counts for something. And I’m human, so I’m susceptible. To a lot of things, really – I try not to think about it.
And while we’re at it, I’d like to cite technology as a disadvantage, too. I mean, the stuff Thor talks about… we’re light years behind, no pun intended. I can’t imagine what I could do what that knowledge.
Occupation: Astrophysicist.
Citizenship: USA
Place of Birth: Columbia Falls, Montana
Relatives: A mother and father, both retirees living in Montana, still in the same house I grew up in.
History: I grew up as an only child in Montana. It’s nice there, not a lot of light pollution and all – which is probably why I became so fascinated with the stars. By the time I was 8 I could map the skies for all four seasons, and that was just the beginning. Sure, I had that phase with the basketball and the trying to fit in… but didn’t everyone? Besides, I’m pretty sure it’s obvious that plan failed.
By the time I hit high school, I was already designing experiments. Monitoring weather patterns, hypothesizing wildly about the theories and metadata I consistently had my head buried in. I was also quite fond of the shop class at my school, and I’d built my own “intelligent weathervane” by the time I’d graduated.
My publications during my long stint at university brought me into the radar of several prominent scientists, which is how I first met Selvig. I’d all but worshipped his designs for years, and I’ll admit I fangirled a little terrifically over his first emails. Beyond my wildest dreams, he became more than a mentor, and was ultimately a sounding board for all my experiments in New Mexico.
Ah… New Mexico. Technically I can’t say a lot about what happened there, but from a scientific point of view, that’s where I began the data collection that led to my theories on the Einstein-Rosen bridge. (Sometimes it’s touted in the scientific community as “The Rainbow Theory” – but you can’t let those things get to you, y’know?) New Mexico was also my introduction to Thor, and there’s no data that could cover that; the man is a marvel…
Ahem, where was I? Einstein-Rosen bridges, right. Still working on those. It’s not enough for me to know the “what” of it… and even that’s just a theory. I’m more interested in the “how.” It’s my major work at the moment, continuing hypothesis on that, but I also dabble in elemental properties and electromagnetic fields. I’ve actually got some great experiments in Wales at the moment, and hopefully I’ll be all over the place for at least the next 20 years.
